'Include home science as subject in UPSC exam'

HYDERABAD: Agriculture Minister N. Raghuveera Reddy has asked the Central government to include home science as one of the subjects in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examinations as well as exams conducted by the Public Service Commissions (PSCs) of different States.

In separate letters addressed to Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, he said the PSCs at the national and State-level were doing their best in appointing graduates and post-graduates to different civil services, but unfortunately, home science was not included in the UPSC examinations.

The concept of human development index had crept into the lexicon of world bodies and home science education was directly associated with this index.

Graduates and post-graduates taking home science courses were being educated and trained in food and nutrition, child welfare, family counselling, interior design and apparels and textiles. They were found to work efficiently in various sectors where they were employed and would be able to enrich lives of rural and urban people with their knowledge of life skills, he said.
