Karunya University to offer M.A. in English

Karunya University is set to kick off its new postgraduate English programme in a big way. The Department of English, which offers English Lab courses to technical and management students in ‘Language Teaching and Testing’, will now offer an M.A. programme in English, with special focus on ‘Language Teaching’. Admission for this degree is open till July 31.

According to vice-chancellor Paul P. Appasamy, English Language Teaching (ELT) and Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) are the two major areas that are sought after for research work. “The time has come for institutions, teachers and students to realise that specialised language teaching programmes are vital for technical communication.”

J. Sundarsingh, head of the department, said: “The M.A. programme is more practically oriented and includes six laboratory courses and field work. Students who undergo this programme will master skills in teaching English most appropriately and effectively by using literary and linguistic methods with support from technological innovations.”

The Department of English, apart from regular academic curriculum, will offer training to take up BEC, IELTS and TOEFL examinations. Students can enrol for any of the above examinations in the course of the programme. They are also given opportunity to pursue M. Phil., Ph. D. or B. Ed. programmes in the same campus.
