Fight over NRI quota

Hyderabad July 17: The principal secretary (higher education), Mr Ashutosh Mishra, has gone on long leave after developing serious differences with the minister for technical education, Mr R. Chenga Reddy, on admissions for NRI quota seats in the engineering colleges of the state. According to sources, some of the top engineering colleges have been lobbying aggressively to modify the GO on NRI quota admissions.

Apparently Mr Chenga Reddy was reportedly in favour of modifying the GO. However, Mr Mishra had vehemently opposed it. He considered that by making such a move it would dilute the norms issued on the directions of the High Court to ensure merit in management quota seats. According to the present norms, the government allots 25 per cent seats for colleges. In the first phase, NRI students have to be admitted for the 15 per cent seats, while the other 10 per cent has to be offered to the students of other states. It only later if any vacancies arise, students can be admitted. However, this admission would be based on the merit rank secured in Eamcet and Intermediate examinations. Not even a single NRI student ws admitted in the state colleges under the existing NRI quota. The college authorities prefer if the government intervene by including a clause on NRI or NRI sponsored student in the eligibility for admissions. It is learnt that the Mr Chenga Reddy directed Mr Mishra to issue a modified GO but he refused to obey the orders.
