Course for convicts

Hyderabad, June 11: Dr B.R. Ambedkar Open University has decided to offer degree courses to Kadapa central jail prisoners starting this year. This comes despite complaints from Opposition parties that the state is according preferential treatment to the Chief Minister’s home district.
Of 56 prisoners who had appeared for the eligibility test conducted by the University in March, 52 qualified for pursuing degrees courses. Ambedkar Open University has been offering degree and post-graduate courses to prisoners from Rajamundry, Cherlapally and Warangal for the past two decades.
"Prisoners have been showing tremendous interest in pursuing degree courses. We have seen them winning gold medals as well. As prisoners from Kadapa also requested us for degree courses, we decided to start a centre for them in the Kadapa central prison," said the vice-chancellor, Prof. Obulreddy Ramanjula Reddy.
Kadapa prison has more than 1,000 prisoners of whom about 700 are serving life imprisonment. It is also the only central prison in Rayalaseema region where the university has decided to start the courses
The jail authorities have already purchased books worth Rs 50,000 for the prisoners. They are also planing to start a library and a new building for them.
"With most of the prisoners serving life sentence, we want them to reform themselves and spend a dignified life after they release," said Mr Sunil Kumar, DIG (Prisons), Rayalaseema region.
With the inclusion of Kadapa prison, the total number of prisoners pursuing courses offered by the university has gone up to 171 this year. The prisoners get to study in the prison for free. Course material will be supplied by the University.
