HYDERABAD June 26: Notwithstanding the misgivings in some quarters about the Government’s decision to introduce a parallel stream of CBSE in English medium from Class VI in selected Government institutions, officials claim enrolment has been increasing.
With no private English medium schools in the rural areas, the introduction of CBSE English medium under “SUCCESS” programme apparently filled the void.
In urban centres, private English medium schools already exist in good numbers and are believed to offer better quality, opined C.B.S.Venkataramana, Principal Secretary, School Education.
The enrolment into CBSE English medium in 6,500 upper primary schools in the State that were merged with the high schools in their vicinity began when they reopened on June 12.
While the optimum strength in these schools is projected at around 2.6 lakhs at the rate of 40 students per CBSE section, the numbers enrolled in a matter of two weeks are encouraging, officials told The Hindu.
According to the latest figures furnished by the District Education Officers, their number of students opting for the stream stands at 1.05 lakh.
The enrolment will continue normally till mid-July though 90 per cent of admissions are completed by June-end.

“The numbers are encouraging though CBSE English medium stream is offered only as an option,” said School Education Director Bhanumurthy.
Though about 50,000 school assistants, graduates with B.Ed training under the department are accustomed to teaching in English, training in Spoken English would be a continuous process with two days in a month and longer duration in ‘Dasara’ and Sankranti vacation and one month during summer to bolster their confidence levels.

Simultaneously, 50 to 60 teachers from each district with special English as qualification would be sent for three month resource persons training in August to Regional Training Institute in Bangalore and British Council in the Regional Headquarters.
Meanwhile, the printing of textbooks for CBSE stream would start from July 1 and they would be despatched to schools by July 10, Mr.Venkataramana said.
