NEW DELHI: An analysis of the applications submitted by admission seekers at Delhi University reveals that Physics (Honours) is the most popular among all the Science courses on offer.
According to data released by the office of the Dean of Students’ Welfare on Saturday, Hans Raj College has received the maximum number of applications for Physics (Hons) – a grand total of 12,862 – followed closely by Kirori Mal College with 12,853.
Hindu College is not far behind with 12,822 applications for the course while Ramjas and Sri Venkateswara have received 12,651 and 11,493 applications respectively.
At Miranda House, 4,643 girls have applied for Physics (Hons), out of whom around 34 have scored more than 95 per cent.
In fact, a huge number of students who have applied for this course in different colleges of the university have their best four marks in Class XII in the 95-100 per cent and 90-95 per cent categories.
Chemistry (Hons) has a lot of takers as well. The maximum number of candidates have opted for Ramjas College – 12,534 – followed by 12,471 for Kirori Mal.
A total of 12,207 applications have come for Hans Raj College, while 12,018 candidates have applied for the course at Hindu College.
“The data reveals that most high scorers are applying for Physics (Hons), while the number of average performers is more in Chemistry (Hons). It has a lot of candidates who have scored in the bracket of 33-60 per cent and up to 80 per cent,” said Deputy Dean of Students’ Welfare Gurpreet Singh Tuteja.
Between Botany (Hons) and Zoology (Hons), the latter seems to be more popular among students with more candidates opting for it. Hans Raj, Hindu, Kirori Mal and Miranda House have received more applications for Zoology than Botany.
For instance, at Hindu College which has received the maximum number of applications for both these programmes, Zoology (Hons) is the choice of 5,540 candidates against 5,396 for Botany (Hons).
A large number of candidates have shown interest in B.Sc. (Hons) Computer Science.
Hans Raj has got 13,109 applications for this course, with about 621 students from the 90-95 per cent category.
This course is also one of the most popular programmes at Keshav Mahavidyalaya which has attracted 11,045 admission seekers. Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce and Bhaskaracharya College of Applied Sciences are the choice of 10,439 and 10,290 students, respectively.
According to the official data, between B.A. (Hons) Mathematics and B.Sc. (Hons) Mathematics, the latter clearly is the hot favourite. At Hindu College, 12,216 students have applied for B.Sc. (Hons) Mathematics, out of whom 489 have scored between 90 and 95 per cent.
As many as 11,867 admission forms have been received for B.Sc. (Hons) Mathematics at Kirori Mal, while 7,491 students have evinced interest in pursuing B.A. (Hons) Mathematics in that institution.
In the women’s colleges, a large number of students have opted for English (Hons). As many as 12,656 girls want to pursue this course at Indraprastha College for Women while 12,780 have opted for the same at Gargi College.
Now they are all waiting for the day of reckoning.
