Hyderabad, June 4: The much-awaited admission process for the three new IIITs at Basar, Nuzividu and Idupulapaya will start after the merit list is announced on Thursday. The district collectors will announce the mandal-wise merit list and the education officers will send the applications and brochures to all the schools whose names have figured in the list. Students will have to submit the applications to the RDOs by June 14. Classes will begin from August 4.
Of 6,000 seats in the three IIITs, 5,100 students will be selected from rural mandals based on their scores in the SSC exams. The remaining 900 students will be selected on state-wide merit basis. While 5,180 students have been selected from government schools, 820 come from private schools. Boys are allotted 3,295 seats while girls get 2,705 seats.
Of the total 5,100 seats allotted for rural-mandals, coastal Andhra region got 2,142 seats, while Rayalseema and Telangana regions got 1,122 and 1,836 seats respectively. Altogether 468 seats will go to the STs, 1,112 to the SCs, 3,122 seats for the Backward Classes and OCs will get 1,298 seats.
For SC/ST/BC candidates, the course will be free with reimbursement from the state. For OCs, the fees will be Rs 6,000 annually for the first two years and Rs 10,000 for the remaining four years. Bank loans will, however, be arranged for OC students. The state government has allotted Rs 320 crore for the IIITs this year.
All the three IIITs will function under the Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGUKT) being established at Idupulapaya in Kadapa. "It is a experimental university on several counts. The selection procedure churns out the best students. Each student will get a laptop and uniform from the beginning," RGUKT Chancellor Dr Raj Reddy said.
