Both the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) had identified 205 fake universities and institutions during the last three years and in the current year, so far, according to official sources.
The UGC and AICTE keep a watch over such institutions. Of the 205, two were identified by UGC and the rest were fake technical institutions identified by AICTE. The two institutions identified by the UGC are in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
Of the fake institutions spotted by AICTE, 74 are in Maharashtra; 25 in Delhi; 22 in Karnataka; 15 each in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal; 14 in Uttar Pradesh; nine each in Haryana and Chandigarh; eight in Andhra Pradesh; three each in Rajasthan and Gujarat; two each in Kerala and Punjab; and one each in Madhya Pradesh and Goa. The names of these institutions have been included in the list of fake universities, institutions maintained by UGC and AICTE and also posted on their respective web sites.

For prospective students and their parents it has become necessary to be wary not just of fake universities but also AICTE approved ones.
The standard of education and the qualifications of faculty that dlivers this education is even poorer than the standards of rural primary schools. For many colleges it is just a money making game where a pretence of education is mantained
More on this is discussed in my blog at
