Vikrama Simhapuri University established at Nellore

Vikrama Simhapuri Univeristy, Nellore, came into being in June 2008, thus fulfilling a long-cherished dream of the people of Sri Potti Sri Ramulu Nellore district.

C.R. Visweswara Rao has been appointed the first Vice-Chancellor and V. Narayana Reddy the first Registrar of the University. Prof. Rao is a versatile scholar who was earlier the Rector and the Dean (UGC Affairs) at Sri Krishnadevaraya University. He has a rich experience in planning and development, fiscal planning, infrastructure development and the accreditation process, which will go a long way in helping the varsity in tackling its teething troubles. Prof.Reddy has specialized in Anthropology at SV University and has published widely in this field. As he has set a trend in resource mobilization and paved the way for the varsity’s accelerated development, he is expected to do his wee bit in the creation of a unique campus with all facilities at Nellore.

At the first meeting of the varsity’s Monitoring and Development Committee held on 22nd August 2008, it was decided to institute six courses of study, viz., MBA, MCA, M.Sc. Marine Biology, M.Sc. Organic Chemistry, M.A. English and Master of Social Work.

The courses are designed keeping in view the scope for development and the resources available in the region. The importance of Marine Biology to the region having a vast seacoast has at last been duly recognized. “Writing for the Media” will be an important specialization for the M.A. English students, given the proactive role played by the media in enlightening the public on the social and economic development of the nation. Similarly, Disaster Management will be one of the constituent units of the MSW course. The meet decided to initiate in the next couple of years more courses involving a dialogue with the pharmaceutical sector, bio-technology sector and SHAR, thereby ensuring employment to the students.

The district administration is in the process of identifying about 150 acres of land for the university. Once the land allotment is over, the university is all set to take up construction work under public-private partnership. At present, the University is located in the premises of VR College at Nellore. Class work will commence for MBA and MCA on 4th September 2008 and for the remaining courses on 29th September.
