Notes with a difference for budding engineers

IIIT Hyderabad is offering a course on music appreciation for future engineers as part of the B.Tech course

The notes they write simplify the lives and the notes they play just soothe the mind and the soul.

The budding engineers of International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) are not only picking up skills in software and hardware but also the tunes and notes of music.

IIIT, Hyderabad is perhaps the only technical institution in the country that offers a course on music appreciation for the future engineers as a part of the B.Tech course and the reception has been tremendous from students who study it as one of the electives.

Awareness

“The idea is to create awareness about ancient Indian culture and traditions and teach them minimum knowledge of Indian music to strengthen our culture, music, traditions, values and our customs,” says Vasudevan, who conceptualised the idea and the cultural advisor to IIIT.

Numbers increasing

Interestingly, the number of students opting for the course is increasing every year.

“This year we received nearly 150 applications but short-listed 70 odd for this semester,” Mr. Vasudevan explains.

The course introduces students to evolution of Indian music like swaras, concepts of Indian music such as Swarasthanas, various rhythm patterns available in Carnatic music and major ragas apart from various musical instruments, both percussion and non-percussion.

Finer details

Mr. Vasudevan says students also get to learn the finer details of compositions and how they are structured. Learning the traditions of different gharanas and the difference between Indian and Western music is a part of the course.

“Majority of these students will occupy high positions in the society with influence and power.

There can’t be a better mode of promoting Indian music than catching these guys and make them appreciate the great Indian music.”

There is lot of practical application also with students made to listen to various music cassettes and apply their knowledge of music and identify the rhythm of the song. They also attend music concerts and expand their horizon on music.

Change in outlook

“The change in students’ outlook towards Indian arts is amazing after doing this course. And it is quite noticeable,” feels Mr. Vasudevan, who is a recipient of several national and international awards.

He wants this course to be a part of all the universities, technical schools, business schools and civil servant training schools as these are breeding grounds of future Indian leaders who will spread Indian culture across the world.

An opportunity for those without formal education

B.R Ambedkar Open University gives an opportunity to enthusiasts who couldn’t study so far due to their economic conditions, family constraints and other reasons. It is open to candidates who don’t have any formal education or have discontinued their schooling.

They can apply for undergraduate programmes without a second thought as the eligibility test is also quite easy to clear. The courses are accessible to all sections as the course fee also lesser than regular colleges and the generous fee concessions are given by the university.

The university’s commitment of reaching the ‘un-reached’ is apparent in its efforts to reach prisoners. It has four study centres in prisons of Kadapa, Warangal, Rajahmundry and Cherlapally. Open university degrees are considered equivalent to regular degrees and it is no wonder that many have attained considerable achievements with open degrees.

BRAOU beckons

BRAOU invites applications for courses under faculties of arts, sciences, commerce and social sciences in Telugu, English and Urdu media

Distance education played a key role in it taking education to the doorsteps of millions of people who missed out higher education due to various reasons. Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU), the first Open University in the country had its share in the success.

The BRAOU that has provided that much needed additional qualification for people to succeed in life is now inviting applications for B.A, B.Com, B.Sc and B.Sc (Special – Drug Sciences) programmes under faculties of arts, sciences, commerce and social sciences in Telugu, English and Urdu media. The University promises a degree with substance with its flexible time schedules, one-year foundation course, comprehensive course materials, audio-visual teaching format and strong teaching and curricula methodologies.

“Students enjoy great freedom in choosing their subjects,” says the Director of Academics C. Puspha Ramakrishna. In first year, students of all the faculties have to undergo a one-year foundation programme. It not only equips the students with basic knowledge of social sciences, science and technology, English but also allows them to shift their stream of study when specialisation starts in second year.

“For example, a student who did his Intermediate with HEC group can also go for B.Sc if he gets 50 per cent marks in science subjects in the foundation programme,” she said. In the second year, students can choose three from a list of 25 subjects across the four faculties. The course material is a major strength for the undergraduate programmes here. “Many universities don’t provide basic books of the subjects even for postgraduate programmes. We distribute the materials prepared by best brains in the country,” says Vice-Chancellor, O.R. Reddy. Bipin Chandra, Romila Thapar and Sanjay Baru are among the authors of history text books of the university. He says that BRAOU could expand its reach thanks to the strength of the course materials. “Group-I aspirants also prefer our materials,” he stated. The schedules of exams and course completion are quite flexible for the courses, according to Controller of the Examinations, N. Venkatanarayana. Students can sit for the exams in May and December and can also choose their exam dates in the given schedule. The course can be completed in a period of nine years and students will get another nine years extension if needed.

Eligibility

The university supports students through 207 study centres across the State. At the centres, students can attend the weekend contact classes; improve their subject knowledge with audio-video recourses.

Those who have passed the university eligibility test between 2004 and 2007 or with qualification of Intermediate, Diploma, two-year vocational courses and ITI are eligible to apply.

Urdu medium student should have passed Fazil (Jadeed) exam conducted by Adbiyate Urdu, Hyderabad. The candidates, who want to take admission based on eligibility test of 2008, should be more than 18 years before July 1.

Students belonging to SC, ST and PHC categories and prisoners are given full fee concession, if they submit certificates of SSC, caste, unemployment and income. Rest of the students have to pay Rs. 950 for first year and Rs. 1,150 for second and final years.

The science students, except that of mathematics, have to pay Rs. 500 as laboratory fee.

The courses are taught in Telugu, English and Urdu media. In Urdu medium, only History, Political Science, Public Administration, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology subjects are available and B.Com course is not offered.

BRAOU has seven lakh students on its rolls and it is expected to receive nearly 90,000 applications for 2008-09.

“If students can utilise the courses, there is no difference between regular and our open degrees. Many students are doing well in entrance exams of other universities and jobs,” says the Vice-C hancellor.

The last date for submission of application forms is July 24 and it could be extended up to August 20, according to the university authorities. For admission details, contact on 040-23556503 or log on to ‘ www.braou.ac.in’.

CAT online: what it means

The IIMs intend to take CAT online from 2009. Many are enthused about it, but also warn of the demerits.

How about chasing the CAT (Common Admission Test) with a mouse? Well, the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are thinking of conducting the test online from 2009. The institutes had issued a pre-qualification bid on March 31 inviting service providers, information technology firms specialising in assessment and testing services, for taking the test online.
Reports say the IIMs are going in for the online test to handle the increasing number of applicants. A total of 2.3-lakh candidates took the test last year. It is expected that 3-lakh may appear in 2008 and more in 2009.

The IIMs have said that they will retain complete control over the test. One thing is sure — CAT will no longer be a one-day affair. According to reports, the online tests can be taken over say, 15 days or more. Foreign students will be able to take the test locally rather than flying down to India for doing so. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) are online.

Those favouring online CAT say the IIMs can work on these models and adapt the test to the Indian situation. When the examination is spread over days, several question papers with the same level of difficulty have to be set. Some believe that online formats cannot guarantee this. Burhan Hussain, student of IIM, Kozhikode, feels that an online CAT may help resolve issues that had plagued the exam in the past, such as paper leakage and candidates abroad having to travel.

Gautam Bhat, another student, notes that the online format is a step in the right direction, given the fact that CAT is the most competitive entrance test with so much at stake and with a need to continuously improve and align the process with the times.

Many point out some demerits of going online. One of the serious concerns is security.
Burhan says that the online format is thought to be safe, but it can be hacked.
Some people cite the example of an institution that could not successfully conduct an admission test in 2002 because of a snag in connectivity. However, the Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test (BITSAT) and the Manipal University examinations are conducted online.

Snapping of the Net connection, power failure and a hanging computer can hamper a candidate’s performance. These may not be major issues, but can upset the mental framework of even a well-prepared student.

What about building up the huge physical infrastructure needed to seat students in centres across the country? Getting this done in a year is doubtful.

And then, how computer-savvy are the candidates, especially those coming from rural areas? It remains to be seen if the online test centres will help students familiarise themselves with computers before the test as in GMAT sessions. How will one read the passages in the reading comprehension questions in the verbal ability section? Scrolling up and down to read and re-read? Then, much depends on the ease with which one can handle the mouse.

Another major issue will be the rise in the test fee. Already, CAT application costs Rs.1,100. Radhika V., an IIM-K student, says that as CAT goes online, the downside may be that it could get more expensive. “With the multiple applications an MBA aspirant has to make, this will almost certainly add to the burden,” she says. But it is hoped that the IIMs may go for only a marginal increase and the test cost will be within Rs.2,000.

Andhra pradesh State fines colleges

Hyderabad July 24: The state government has slapped penalties on professional educational institutions, including B.Ed colleges, for flouting admission norms. The erring colleges are Madhav IASE Bhongir, Nalgonda (2 seats), Karunodya B Ed College, R R district (11 seats), St George College of Education, R R district (2 seats), Vennela IASE, Nalgonda (2 seats), Bhongir College of Education, Bhongir, Nalgonda (2 seats), Sri Chaitanya College of Education, Podili, Prakasam district (2 seats) and Margadarshi College of Education, Mahbubabad, Warangal district (50 seats). Five private unaided B Ed colleges, which had filled up the left over seats during 2006-2007 violating the admission rules, were imposed penalty of Rs 10,000 per seat.

The matter came to light after the Andhra Pradesh Council for Higher Education (APSCHE) conducted an inquiry into the admission process. The council said the seats were filled up by the management under the convenor quota. A report submitted by the council to the government found that the colleges filled up a total of 71 seats. Principal secretary Dr C.B.S Venkataramana who examined the report also levied a penalty of Rs 10,000 per seat on Sri Chaitanya College of Education in Prakasam district and decided to ratify the admissions made in violation of the rules . Sources said several colleges were flouting the admission norms and the government decided to deal with them sternly. “Due to heavy demand for B Ed seats, some colleges are blatantly flouting admission norms. Hefty penalties and derecognising the institutions is the only solution,” a senior official said.

Medical students learn art of suturing

GUNTUR: About 25 postgraduate students of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology were taught basic skills in surgical procedures at a workshop on Art of Suturing organised on Government General Hospital premises on Thursday. The workshop is part of a programme launched by Ethicon Inc., Johnson & Johnson company and global medical device company that develops and markets surgical products for use in general surgery, wound management and women’s health and urology.

With all the surgical instruments lined up neatly on tables and dummy models of various body parts, the seminar hall resembled an operation theatre. With a couple of flat TVs beaming real time video images of the entire procedure, students were able to witness their work and learn to take corrective measures accordingly. For most of them, the workshop proved beneficial as they could learn and perfect the nitty-gritty of complex surgical procedures and perfect the basic skills required for general surgery.

Covers basic skills

Main resource person and noted surgeon B. Yogiram said that the workshop covered basic skills required for performing general surgeries with the help of video presentations. Students were explained the basic skills of incisions and sutures and later were made to practise them on dummy models and animals. The skills included, knotting, threading, handling of various surgical instruments and suturing.

He said that most of the PG students read about the basic skills in their graduation and would not have scope for learning it through practical method. The Johnson & Johnson Company has undertaken this programme in all the medical schools in the State.

Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department B. Vasanth Kumar was present.

Graduates from rural areas get their due

Surging ahead: Rural graduates at a BPO centre of HDFC Bank in Tirupati.
HYDERABAD: Salma Sultana’s rural and orthodox background hardly came in her way of becoming a processor in a BPO. Hailing from Muthukuru mandal of Nellore district, her peer K. Sudheer shouldered the job responsibilities with a great flourish.
It’s a metamorphosis for the likes of Salma and Sudheer from BOP (bottom of the pyramid) to BPO (business process outsourcing), when HDFC Bank picked them up for challenging assignments, thanks to the customised training imparted by the Employment Generation and Marketing Mission (EGMM), an arm of the Rural Development Department.
Good demand
With their family status and income improving, these young men and women are able to fend for their siblings’ education or to create an asset in the households. Graduates from underprivileged families in rural areas, trained by the EGMM, are now hotcakes for multi-national companies to work in their rural BPOs.
Till six months ago, HDFC Bank faced a problem in selecting right candidates for its rural operations. But today, the bank is more than satisfied by the setting up of its first rural BPO in Nellore with the EGMM-trained manpower. The simple non-voice based operations like scanning and data processing work that are transferred to its BPO in Nellore is completely handled by 325-strong workforce.
The bank officials, who had their own reservations on the Nellore operations, went a step forward to set up its second BPO in Tirupati. Its operations, to be handled by a 1,500-strong workforce, will commence on Friday.
Executive Director of EGMM Meera Shenoy says: “Partnering HDFC Bank was exciting, since the bank shared our passion of focusing only on the rural poor and mainstreaming them into white-collared local jobs in their BPO.”
Hemanth, Head, Human Resources, ADFC, the phone banking division of HDFC Bank, Mumbai, admitted that he was apprehensive about the quality of manpower trained by the government institutions. “But after conducting the interviews, I was amazed to see the candidates’ confidence, grooming and English standards,” he remarked.
A content Salma said: “People’s age-old views on girls like me working have changed now.” The BPO job came in handy for Sudheer to supplement the income of his father, a farm labourer, in sending his younger siblings to school.

VIJAYAWADA: Counselling for admission into MBBS/BDS courses for 2008-‘09 will be held from July 23 to 29 at five centres in the State. Candidates can attend counselling at any of the five centres.

EAMCET rank holders, who have applied in response to the notification of Dr. NTR-UHS issued recently, are eligible to attend the counselling.

The five centres include OU campus (PGRR Centre for Distance Education),

Open competition seats in medical and dental colleges will be filled simultaneously.

Students asked to come prepared for counselling

VIJAYAWADA: The online counselling for admissions into engineering courses based on EAMCET ranks went on smoothly with students and parents arriving with hope at Government Polytechnic College here on Friday.

Officials advised rank holders and their parents to come well prepared with all information about their chosen courses and colleges to the counselling hall to avoid delays in the process.

It was noticed that some students came accompanied by their parents and took more time at the computer to make their choice of course and college, which caused inconvenience to others. Some parents went to the extent of making calls on mobile phones to seek advice on the choice.

“As this is an online counselling, delay caused by any student will affect all others in the State. They should come with all necessary information. So, no inconvenience will be caused to anybody,” said R. Subhakara Raju, regional coordinator of EAMCET counselling and also principal of Government Polytechnic College, the venue of counselling.

Smooth counselling

Much effort had to be made to ensure smooth counselling, as it was being held in the city for the first time. There were networking problems initially, which could be solved later. Students were turning up for counselling here from Krishna, West Godavari and East Godavari districts.

Mr. Subhakara Raju said that they were allowing only one parent to enter the counselling hall. Considering the convenience and smooth conduct of the counselling, a student should not take much time to choose a seat. All the information about colleges and courses was made available on the website “ www.eamcet.dte.ac.in”, officials said.

Students are advised to visit the website and prepare a list of choice colleges and courses that he or she would be able to get based on their respective EAMCET ranks. If this preparation was made prior to arrival at counselling centre, they would be able to save a lot of their time and also that of others.
