Job offers for nurses in the United States

Digest this. According to a study conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labour, employment opportunities for Registered Nurses (RNs) in that country will grow faster than the average for all occupations, through 2008.

Industry watchers in the United States estimate that around 1,26,000 nurses are required by various hospitals in the U.S.

So, if you are interested in working in the U.S. and are thinking about giving the counselling for nursing a miss, ponder over it again. Among all the countries whose hospitals absorb nurses from India, USA heads the list.

More than 75 per cent of the vacancy advertisements placed by various hospitals in the U.S. are for trained nurses, which illustrates the huge demand the country has for trained nurses.
The American Medical Association, in a journal published in 2001 envisaged that the United States would face a shortage of nurses by as much as 20 per cent by the year 2020 that comes to around four lakh nursing jobs, going by a rough estimate.

However, becoming a registered nurse in the U.S. is not as easy as pie. There are two main stumbling blocks for someone to overcome before he/she would be eligible to get a job there.
Every India-trained nurse would have to clear a test administered by the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS), an internationally recognised authority that evaluates and verifies credentials pertaining to the education, registration and licensure of nurses and health care professionals worldwide.

The test is designed to gauge the technical competence of a nurse. It is usually conducted in March, July and November and has objective-type questions.

Upon clearing the CGFNS test, a nurse would have to appear for and pass the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examination.

IELTS evaluates a candidate’s proficiency in English and is held twice every month. A nurse should be able to meet the minimum IELTS band score of 6.5 for academic and 7.0 for spoken to be eligible.

One more barrier needs to be crossed — the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), conducted by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). Upon clearing this examination, one would be able to get employed as an RN in any hospital in the U.S.

Jobs in U.K., UAE

Not just the U.S., but leading countries around the globe like U.K., UAE, Canada and others have a huge demand for healthcare nursing professionals.

PG diploma in fitness management

Keeping one’s body, to meet the demands of the present-day lifestyle, seems to be on everybody’s wish list. The craving for a ‘six-pack’ and rising awareness on virtues of staying fit have fuelled growth of fitness centres everywhere.
However, due to lack of dedicated training institutes, fitness industry is facing a severe crunch of trained manpower.
Even though many private firms including Nike and Reebok have forayed into fitness training, such courses are of short-duration aimed at specialization.
To provide a holistic fitness education, University of Hyderabad (UoH) started the Centre for Physical Fitness and Sports Sciences (CPFSS) to offer courses in health fitness.
CPFSS has launched PG Diploma in Health Fitness and Life Style Management, a one-year fully residential course.
The course trains students in all major Indian and Western exercises such as yoga, aerobics etc.
The students also have to study allied sciences such anatomy, physiology, sports medicine and kinesiology.

The SC and ST reservation is applicable in seat allocation. The tuition fee is Rs. 19,000 for two semesters.

Online training for GRE aspirants

Valued Epistemics Pvt. Ltd. has launched GREedge.com, India’s first online training for GRE aspirants across the country. The product is a result of research and development since 2005 and has seen 15,000 plus successful candidates passing through its portals in the beta stage on its technology platform Wizdom.in.

Anand Kannan, Managing Director, VEPL, said “GRE is an online test and we felt the need for the preparation also to be on an online platform, hence “GREedge.com”. “The inherent advantage of an online platform is that students can learn at their own pace and convenience, making it truly an anywhere, anytime learning.”

Another key advantage is that the student counsellor understands the time available and the student’s specific skills to customise a programme.

Feedback

The company announced the launch of “The Millisecond Technology,” a software which captures information on how students answer the questions, analyse the data, and offers them feedback and recommendations to boost their score. This technology is under patent.

In an online test environment where every millisecond counts for scoring, this technology plays a crucial role in helping students boost their scores.

Yogish Lavanis, co-founder, Director & Head (Student Facilitation), said “There are two aspects to the functioning of Millisecond Technology — data capturing and analysis. The most important difference is that it does the analysis in real-time.” When students log on to GREedge.com and start working on model tests, the Millisecond monitor, which is embedded in the page, records the way students select their answers and with the help of predictive analytics technology, “slices the data.”

The information is crystallised into feedback on their strengths and weaknesses, helping them understand where they are losing time and help them in correcting it. Students interested in this training can go to www.greedge.com or e-mail info@greedge.com.

Orientation programme and remedial coaching

Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) organised an orientation programme and remedial coaching for students belonging to the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and backward communities recently.

The event was organised by the standing committee for the welfare of Scheduled Castes-Scheduled Tribes at the university.

Experts took classes on personality improvement and better communication skills on the occasion.

During the inaugural function, Gangan Prathap, Vice-Chancellor, urged the students to adapt quickly to the changing university atmosphere.

The Vice-Chancellor also urged the student community to improve their skills in communicative English.

Mr. Prathap said that Kerala should have at least 15 universities in the next five years.
He said that there were only two universities from the State at present among the top 100 in the country.

Online repository

CUSAT has come up with an institutional repository where its research publications and Ph.D. theses would be available online for the public. The facility will provide pre-prints and post-prints of research journal articles and digital versions of theses and dissertations.

Keeping in tune with the objectives of the open access movement, the facility helps the institute researchers in self-archiving and long-term preservation of their scholarly publications, provides easy access to these publications world wide and improves the impact of their research.
Institutional repositories are also partly linked to the notion of a digital library — collecting, housing, classifying, cataloguing, preserving and providing access to digital content, analogous with the library’s conventional function of collecting, housing classifying, preserving and providing access to analog content.

The main objectives for having an institutional repository include creating global visibility for an institution’s scholarly research and to collect content in a single location.

It also provides open access to institutional research output by self-archiving it.

Online repositories also help in storing and preserving other institutional digital assets, including unpublished theses or technical reports.

The networking would help in sharing information, exchanging ideas and organising video conferencing.

The DBT had already the prepared the syllabus for the programme and computing systems would be shared among the institutions, he said.

The postgraduate programme in bioinformatics was supported by the DBT, he said.
In order to promote bioinformatics as an interesting subject, the DBT is conducting a national-level Bioinformatics National Certification examination.

It is a tough examination and those who pass it would get cash awards besides an opportunity to obtain scholarships for taking up higher studies in the subject, Dr. Madhan Mohan said.

AP eases rules for NRI students

Hyderabad July 31: The state government has set the stage for the ‘back-door entry’ of ordinary students under the garb of NRI students into professional courses with the inclusion of the ‘NRI-sponsored student’ clause. While some states like Punjab have done away with ‘NRI-sponsored seats’ following complaints of large-scale irregularities which led to legal tangles, the state government has now decided to embrace the same concept by issuing three GOs (141, 142 & 143) on Thursday. The orders include the clause ‘NRI sponsored student’ for admissions into professional courses like engineering, MBA and MCA.

In the process, the state government has diluted the norms it had fixed to follow merit in the admissions for management quota seats in accordance to the directions of the High Court. It’s a known fact that though the management quota seats are called ‘NRI seats’, the students occupying them haven’t ever crossed the international border. A student with top rank in Eamcet sits in the same class as an NRI-sponsored student who was not even qualified in the test and secured only pass marks in the intermediate.

There were allegations that some of the top engineering colleges in the state, which face huge demand for management quota seats, pressurised the government to include the clause ‘NRI-sponsored students’ along with ‘NRI students’ seats. Without the clause ‘NRI-sponsored’, the colleges were forced to offer the vacant NRI seats to merit students. Several colleges have not even issued notifications for admissions into NRI quota seats so far.

Admission to management seats to be from entrance rank list

KOCHI: The Kerala High Court on Thursday directed that admission to management seats in self-financing medical colleges which had entered into an agreement with the government on seat-sharing and fee structure be made from the common entrance rank list published by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations.

Justice S. Siri Jagan also made it clear that the admission should be made from the rank list in accordance with the merit without changing inter se merit. The judge also ordered that no admission be made in pursuance to the entrance examination conducted by the association of these self-financing college managements.

The interim order was passed on writ petitions challenging the agreements.

In the order, the judge pointed out that the association had conducted its entrance test on July 27, which was against the schedule fixed by the Medical Council of India and the Supreme Court.
The judge said that in view of the Supreme Court ruling, the entire admission process in medical colleges should be made in accordance with the time schedule fixed by the Medical Council of India and the Supreme Court.

The court observed that except the apex court, no other authority could change the schedule. As per the schedule, the entrance test should be conducted in May and the first round of admission should be over by July 25. So, the test by the managements association was directly against the MCI schedule and Supreme Court ruling.

The court had directed earlier that these managements could collect only the fee prescribed by the Fee Regulatory Committee until the Supreme Court approved the agreements reached between the managements and the government. The petitioners contended that refundable deposit and fee for management seats were Rs.5.lakh and Rs.5.5 lakh as per the agreements.
However, the self-financing colleges which refused to ink an agreement with the government could only collect a fee ranging from Rs.2.4 lakh to Rs. 2.5 lakh prescribed by the Committee.
The petitioners said that the agreements went against the Supreme Court verdict which ruled out capitation fee and provision of cross-subsidy. Therefore, the fee hike was illegal.

Besides, the agreements had not been approved as yet either by the Admission Supervisory Committee or the Supreme Court.

The action of the government was against Article 14 of the Constitution, the petitioners pointed out.
