Computer training institute for visually challenged

The institute is being set up by Adarsa Andhula Samkshema Sangham

VIJAYAWADA: A residential computer training institute for the visually challenged, stated to be the first of its kind in the State, is being inaugurated at Gudivada on October 15 on the occasion of World White Cane Day.

The institute is being set up by Adarsa Andhula Samkshema Sangham, an association floated by a few socially conscious visually challenged persons, who are already running a sound library in Gudivada for the benefit of visually challenged students.

Association’s secretary A. Srinivasulu said on Saturday that the institute was being opened with 10 computers to begin with.

A maximum of 50 students would be admitted initially, who would be taught the basics of computers depending on their educational qualification.

A pass in SSC was a must for joining the training institute.

Mr. Srinivasulu said the institute was being set up at a cost of Rs.2.8 lakhs, which was donated by a Hyderabad-based philanthropist. A part of the amount had been used to acquire computers and other required infrastructure, and the remaining amount would be enough to run the institute for three months.

Sponsors were being scouted for to get the institute going after three months.

He hoped that a grant-in-aid could be secured from the Union Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment if the institute was run for at least two years. Jaws, a software that reads the commands appearing on the screen, and Kuzral, a software that reads the scanned book, would be available in the computers to make the training easier for the candidates.

Mr. Srinivasulu said those interested in joining the training could contact him on phone 98491-00373 or by sending their application and bio-data to the association’s office at Shop No.2 A, Municipal Complex, Nehru Chowk, Gudivada – 521301.
