Bioinformatics networking

The Department of Biotechnology under the Union Ministry of Science and Technology will network the postgraduate course in Bioinformatics from the next academic year, said Dr. T. Madhan Mohan, Adviser, Department of Biotechnology (DBT).

At present the postgraduate course is being offered in Anna University in Chennai, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai, Central University, Puducherry and a few other private institutions.

At present the course is offered individually by the universities and the private institutions.
The networking would help in sharing information, exchanging ideas and organising video conferencing.

The DBT had already the prepared the syllabus for the programme and computing systems would be shared among the institutions, he said.

The postgraduate programme in bioinformatics was supported by the DBT, he said.
In order to promote bioinformatics as an interesting subject, the DBT is conducting a national-level Bioinformatics National Certification examination.

It is a tough examination and those who pass it would get cash awards besides an opportunity to obtain scholarships for taking up higher studies in the subject, Dr. Madhan Mohan said.
