Employment fair at Calicut University

Calicut University is organising a mega job fair for the students of its affiliated colleges. The employment fair, to be held on the university campus at Tenhipalam on November 22 and 23, is expected to bring over a dozen companies and thousands of students to the campus. Although started in a bigger way, with 32 companies evincing interest to come and conduct mass recruitment, the ongoing global economic recession has brought a pall to the ambitious plans of the university. “We have been forced to slash the number of days to two from three,” said V.K. Janardhanan, Placement Officer of the university.

The university has ensured the participation of a dozen-odd companies. Prominent among the companies coming to the fair on November 22 and 23 are HCL, Maersk, Sitel and Reliance.

Most of the companies will be offering opportunities at the entry level. “That brings good news to the general graduates of our affiliated arts and science colleges,” said Dr. Janardhanan. As the appointments of second level managerial cadres are generally frozen the world over, MBA students may not find the fair an attractive affair. Similarly, professional students of law colleges, dental colleges, medical colleges, nursing colleges and teacher-education colleges too may not find the mela useful. However, for B.Tech., M.C.A., BA, B.Sc. and B.Com. students of the affiliated colleges, the fair is poised to provide a golden opportunity to bargain and land a good job.

Maersk, a shipping firm, alone has 600-odd openings. “But the job fair doesn’t provide any guarantee that they fill all their vacancies. They have promised to recruit if they get the right candidates,” said Dr. Janardhanan.

It is the first time in the State that a university is providing a platform for the entire students of its affiliated colleges to seek employment. Although companies have been approaching colleges for campus recruitments, such fairs would usually get limited to individual campuses. According to Calicut University authorities, more than 10,000 students are expected to attend the two-day job fair. The representatives of 70-odd affiliated colleges had attended a meeting held in connection with the job fair. Fresh graduates as well as those passing out in 2009 too will be considered by the recruiters. However, the university authorities could not elaborate on the kind of jobs that will be offered. “The outlook and demands of each recruiter will be different,” said Dr. Janardhanan. It was only a few months ago that Calicut University set up a placement cell for its students. Hungarian firm Trasset and its subsidiaries had recruited 52-odd students from a mini job fair organised by the university placement cell in March. While 42 of the jobs went to engineering graduates, 10 were bagged by general graduates.

All about executive MBA programme

MBA in India is available as full-time programmes, part-time programmes, two-year programmes, one /one-and-a-half-year executive programmes and several specialisations. We have universities offering courses as MBA and executive MBA, and premier institutes like SP Jain Institute of Management and Research offering courses as Post Graduate Diploma in Management and Executive Management Programmes.

We also have universities like TASMAC that award degrees of universities abroad. But, the academic content delivered by all courses is almost the same. Any MBA programme aims at equipping the students with skills required to succeed in the corporate world. In a typical two-year course, the first year exposes the student to the different functional areas. And the second year allows the student to choose an area of specialisation. On the other hand, one-year programmes accelerate the curriculum taking advantage of the fact that students who enrol for these courses have prior work experience. Their experience would have already acquainted them with the several aspects of business administration, made them aware of their strengths, weaknesses and areas to improve. One-year executive MBAs or EMBAs are for professionals who need the degree to step ahead in their careers and wish to hone their skills. EMBA is usually offered in part-time mode, as the students would be continuing to work.

The success of any MBA programme depends on the students. This is the reason why most business schools try to constitute a class with students from various academic and professional backgrounds.

The interaction between the students on the projects and other activities they take up as teams, discussions and presentations offer them new perspectives and ideas. By the end of the course, the students get transformed into more competent and confident professionals.

And this is the purpose of an MBA programme. Whether it is MBA or EMBA, when the students have some work experience, the learning is more enriched, faster and easier.

In an executive MBA programme, some students have even five to ten years of experience. Most of them will be from middle or higher managerial roles. The contributions each of them makes to the learning process of the whole class are really significant and valuable. So, based on the work experience a person has, his credentials and aims, he can choose between opting for an MBA or EMBA.

Now that you have registered for EMBA in distance mode, make sure that you attend all the contact classes. Try to discuss on various academic topics with your classmates. Most of all, relate your course content and work. Apply what you learn to your work and use your work to grasp better, the content of your course. The degree awarded by the university will be Executive MBA.

Wipro recruitment drive

Institute of Electronic Governance (IEG) organised an off campus recruitment drive for Wipro BPO Hyderabad centre at Rishi UBR Degree College for Women. The drive was conducted to recruit costumer care and technology support associates and about 250 students, across the disciplines, participated.

The Chief Executive Officer of IEG, Amaranath Reddy Atmakuri, said they were arranging on and off campus interviews to provide right platform for graduates, especially at the initial phase of their career. In her presentation, Geeta Naresh, Manager – Talent Acquisition, Wipro BPO, said that they are witnessing high growth while there was a slump in job market and the Hyderabad centre was hiring 400 fresh graduates.

Success with technical writing

A good technical writer also has to be good at training others, because it is a part of the job profile.

If your passion for technology is exceeded only by your passion to communicate, there is a career which may be ‘write’ up your alley.

In an IT firm, technical writers are needed to communicate what the software does. This could be in terms of user documentation, user manuals or any other documentation that is required to support a technical endeavour.

To know more about what it takes to make a technical writer, Education Plus spoke to Lalitha Subramanian, who heads the Technical Writing Department at Tata Consultancy Services.

Ms. Subramanian sums up three must have for a tech writer – understanding of complex technology and complex applications which can be translated for the user. So, technical writing means writing to a specification for a specific audience, she says. It does not stop here. “Excellent communication skills, ability to understand technical concepts, business, domain and applications is needed,” starts off Ms. Subramanian ticking off a long list of qualities of a tech writer. The writing has to be simple, easy to understand. It cannot be jargon-free but you have to use jargon effectively and accurately, she says. Good language skills are a must. The tools of the trade come later, she says. And, those skills are put to test – TCS has a three-hour test for tech writers. “We believe we can train those recruited,” she says. Most of the skill is learned on the job. “Larger organisations act as effective training grounds for freshers to get into the groove,” she says.

And, a good technical writer also has to be good at training others, because it is a part of the job profile. “You need to make others write well too. Constantly you need to educate yourself. Work on smarter and more innovative ways,” says Ms. Subramanian. Sounds tough? There is more.

“The salaries are equal to that of IT professionals,” says Ms. Subramanian. And the career path is similar to that of an IT professional. The timelines could get aggressive. “With delivery deadlines closing in, there could be a lot of pressure,” says Ms. Subramanian. Multi-tasking also takes up time. “You will be working on multiple projects,” she says. And, there are opportunities to go abroad. “Onsite assignments in projects where they need documentation are there,” she adds.

So, who can become a tech writer? “English majors, journalism majors, MBAs, Commerce, lot of technical graduates who want to communicate end up joining us,” she says. There is a lack of good courses for technical writing, says Ms. Subramanian.

“If courses are designed collaborating with the industry, it would be great,” she adds. And, tech writing is a skill which Ms. Subramanian says every IT professional needs to know. “Engineering colleges should have such a course,” she says, “It is proven that as you move up the ladder, you spend more time communicating.”

MBAs with a difference - Distance education and online courses are on offer

The global financial crisis and the consequent downturn in the job market has the B-school aspirant in a quandary. The highly coveted management degree, which had been riding on a high courtesy the bustling economy, seems to be faltering a bit.

Though this does not affect elite institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Management, the smaller colleges, courses and less-traditional options are now being looked at with measured scepticism. And rightfully so, say experts and management academics, who feel that management education cannot be delivered at the click of a mouse or through a virtual classroom. However, for scores of students and even young working professionals, distance education MBAs provide an opportunity to enhance their skills and even climb up the corporate ladder.

Several universities in India offer distance education MBAs. While several private players have stepped in, enticing students with career growth and even placements, there is hardly any regulation. Experts say that the best way to go about choosing a course would be to check if it has the approval of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Distance Education Council (DEC) or the University Grants Commission (in the case of a university). Several leading Business Schools, such as IIM-Bangalore and Symbiosis College, offer such courses. Though they ride piggyback on the reputation of their mainstream courses, the brand name lends some credibility, says Ajay Arora of the Triumphant Institute of Management Education (T.I.M.E.).

Experts also recommend the distance education course offered by the Indira Gandhi National Open University because it is structured and has a strong system — country-wide network of contact classes and study material — in place. Universities such as the Annamalai University, Madurai Kamraj University and ICFAI (private) have some programmes. Specialised MBAs such as Hospital Management, Health Science in physiotherapy, applied nutrition, education, finance and banking are also gaining ground.

Comparison

Basu Sankarshan, associate professor in finance and control area at IIM-B, says that the institute has at least four distance education cycles running every year for candidates with different experience levels. The Post-Graduate Software Enterprise Management programme is the only one that gives a diploma. Other certificate programmes include both live and remote learning. So, do these distance courses match up to the real thing i.e. a full-time classroom-based course? “Obviously not. A regular MBA is rated much higher. We try to incorporate three to five days of pure campus visit to try and give them that classroom experience,” Prof. Basu says.

Several foreign universities also offer online MBA courses. These include online lectures (sometimes not even interactive), CDs and study material. These courses are very expensive and there is no regulatory body to help students make a decision. Mr. Arora feels that though this may seem like a more comfortable option, one cannot expect too much premium from it. “Not too many employers will give these certificates a great amount of credit. It could be an additional qualification, and those who are already working may get some additional mileage within their companies, but the buck stops there,” he explains.

The current market — with its downturn and trimmed down avatar — will prove to be a leveller, experts say. J. Philip, former director of IIM-B and President of the Xavier Institute of Management Education, says that in the absence of any regulatory authority, the industry (or market) will act as one. “Employers are very, very discerning and do not value token certificates. In the case of an Indian Distance Education programme you at least get some contact classes and interaction. The foreign (online) courses are rather bleak. A lot of students are being lured by them and they are also very expensive,” Prof. Philip explains.

Warning

He dismisses the distance mode because he feels that management education is far beyond reading books and making notes. “Skills, attitudes and habits can only be taught in a full-time course. You will get a certificate, but remember management education is not like an M.A. in History or Sociology,” Prof. Philip warns. It involves team work, face-to-face interaction and a strong course; all of which is only possible in a full-time course. The one-year Executive MBA programme, which is gaining popularity, is a better option, Prof. Philip says. “This, probably, will give students, who cannot afford a long break from work, a better option to get trained in management.”

The full-time MBA courses offered overseas have not lost their sheen. However, with the depreciating rupee and the global financial crisis, students are finding it too expensive. “Recently, Citibank pulled out on loan tie-ups with U.S. Business Schools and if this trend continues, then going abroad will not be a viable option,” says Nishant Agarwal, an employee in a software company.

“This financial crisis has made the Indian student cautious about looking westward for an MBA degree in terms of jobs and placements,” says Mr. Arora. But students must graduate to thinking of what skills and perspective they can get from a management degree rather than just worry about the profile of companies where they will be placed, he adds. “That will help them decide on what course, be it distance education, online or full-time, is of real value.”
