Hyderabad, June 17: The student-teacher ratio could not have been better than this. Only one candidate has applied for post-graduation in Tamil in Osmania University this year. When classes start in July, it will be just one teacher and a student. The university did not even conduct entrance for the stream as there are 20 seats.
The university has in fact cancelled the entrances for post-graduation in Kannada, Persian and Marathi because of a lack of interest among students. Only nine candidates have applied for Kannada while just 15 applied for Persian this year. Though there are hardly any takers for these courses, the University authorities said they have no plans of scrapping it.
"We have been offering these courses for the past many years. Though the response for these courses is discouraging, we will not cancel these courses," said Prof Tirupathi Rao, the vice-chancellor.
"I have suggested that authorities change the Tamil syllabus for attracting more students, said Dr P.Vellangiri, a Tamil professor. Many professors said since their courses are not offered at the under-graduate level, there are hardly any takers at the post-graduate level.
"Earlier many colleges in the city were offering a degree in Kannada. Now most of the colleges have scrapped the course as a degree in Kannada doesn’t fetch a job here. We have students coming from north Karnataka districts to pursue their PG," says Dr Narayana Prasad, the professor of Kannada in OU.
