HYDERABAD: The seventh convocation of the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Hyderabad held on Sunday was a memorable one for the 10-year-old institute with the award of the first Ph.D produced by the institute.
The institute was primarily established to promote research in the emerging areas of computer sciences and information technology.
Million Meshesha, an Ethiopian national was awarded the Doctorate for his thesis on ‘Recognition and Retrieval from Documents Image Collections.’
Amidst thunderous applause, he was put on a robe by his supervisor Prof. C.V. Jawahar and the doctorate was awarded by IIIT Chairman Prof. Raj Reddy.
Flexibility
Rajeev Sangal, Director, IIIT-H said that it was the only institute in the country allowing undergraduate students to participate in the ongoing research.
The institute had a special undergraduate programme woven with a vibrant postgraduate programme wherein students have the flexibility in selecting courses and undertaking projects.
He said the research culture reflected in the campus recruitments with the B.Tech (Hons) and MS students getting placed in all the top research companies with an average salary of Rs. 7.20 lakh per annum.
The highest salary offered was Rs. 12 lakh per annum.
Exchange programme
Prof. Sangal said the institute’s ambitious research exchange programme with leading research groups in the world helped students to spend time at the participatory university abroad. The aim of the institute was to reach 100 Ph.D admissions per year by 2012 and thus placing it along with leading research institutes in the world.
This year IIIT-H admitted around 125 research students taking the total number to 307 with 84 Ph.D students and 223 MS students.
Naidu, YSR thanked
Prof. Raj Reddy explained the efforts that went into creating the institute and acknowledged the support of the then Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu and Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy in giving a shape to it. He also complimented the efforts put in by senior IAS officer Ajay Sawhney. Lakshmi Narayanan, Vice-Chairman, Cognizant Technology Solutions, delivered the convocation address.
Gold medals
More than 250 students were conferred degrees at the convocation and they displayed their accomplishment by traditionally throwing their hats into the air. Kritika Tandon was awarded the IIIT gold medal for securing highest cumulative grade point average in the graduating class. She also shared the programme gold medal with M. Kirthi Krishna.
Swati Jain got the medial for best all round performance while Piyush Jain got the Banyan award. Kamalakar Karlapalem, Dean (Academic), P.J. Narayanan, Dean (R&D) were among those present.
