HYDERABAD: The State government will institute lifetime achievement awards for outstanding teachers from next year.
The awards will carry cash and recognition of the service of the recipients who will be selected from various sectors of education. The number of recipients will be limited to eight to ten, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy announced while giving away the State awards-2008 at the Teachers Day celebrations at the Ravindra Bharathi here on Friday.
Dr. Reddy assured teachers that the State government would go to any extent to secure President’s assent for implementation of integrated service rules to them.
He appealed to them not to compromise on teaching standards. The Chief Minister stated that the country was ahead in Information Technology (IT) mainly on account of its trained teachers. With a view to promoting IT education further, the State government established the Rajiv Knowledge University with three International Institutes of Information Technology (IIIT) affiliated to it. The government would invest Rs. 1,200 crore on each IIIT. The government would spend up to Rs. 1.5 lakh annually on each student admitted to the institute. Dr. Reddy said the government considered distribution of scholarships, tuition fee reimbursement and providing hostel facility for weaker sections an investment. It was of the view that any lowering of guard in education would affect students. Higher Education Minister R. Chenga Reddy said the government sanctioned 42 degree, 33 junior and 22 polytechnic colleges this year. School Education Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha, Sarva Siksha Abhiyan Minister M. Hanumantha Rao and Principal Secretary of Higher Education Asutosh Mishra also spoke.
